Monia (correct) Bortolotti was put in custody in Pedrengo, Lombardy, on 4th November following months of investigations.

The decease of her four-month-old daughter Alice in November 2021 was initially considered a case of sudden cot death by medics.

At birth, Alica was reportedly slightly underweight but in good health nevertheless.

But police investigators grew suspicious when her second child, Mattia, died in October 2022. The boy was just two months old.

Monia, nicknamed Mia by friends, was born in India. Adopted by an Italian couple at the age of one, she grew up in the region.

The student’s partner Cristian Zorzi tried his best to support her in managing her maternal obligations, say local media.

However, the 52-year-old’s time had been cut short by a full-time job in a paint factory.

After the death of Mattia, prosecutors in Bergamo ordered the opening of Alice’s coffin.

However, their investigations did not lead anywhere due to the bad condition of the corpse due to the coffin’s poor quality.

But local police decided to continue examining the deaths of her young children.

They analysed medical records and interviewed doctors and experts as well as friends and relatives of the couple.

Medical investigations revealed that Mattia died from “acute mechanical asphyxia due to compression of the chest through a voluntary action . . .”

The cops also found out that Monia called Cristian at work in September 2022, one month before Mattia’s death, to tell him that their son’s skin had turned purple and that he had stopped breathing.

The baby was rushed to hospital where doctors managed to save his life. He was discharged in perfect health.

Investigators believe that this was Monia’s first attempt to murder Mattia and that she had used a pillow to suffocate both babies.

They assume that the mother “couldn’t stand the uninterrupted crying of the little ones,” say local media.

Monia reportedly deplored the death of her children in groups discussing sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) on social media where she allegedly called them her “little angels.”

She was detained after her statements were considered to be inconsistent and conflicting.

Monia faces charges for double infanticide. She remains in custody as investigations continue.
