The suspect had arrest warrants in his name in both Brazil and Paraguay and Alicia Sapriza, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation and the operation, told local media: “It is an important achievement after more than a year of investigation”.

According to reports Felicio is linked with marijuana, cocaine and weapon trafficking, money laundering and being a hitman.

Sapriza said the arrest was a blow to the PPC which according to a 2012 Brazilian Government report is the largest Brazilian criminal organisation with a membership of almost 20,000 members. This gang is linked with prison breaks, prison riots, drug trafficking and highway robbery among other criminal activity.

The Red Command is primarily involved in arms and drug trafficking and controls parts of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The police operation also saw Marcio Gayoso, 27, arrested in the town of Pedro Juan Caballero 500 kilometres from the Paraguayan capital. He is suspected of being an important cooperator with Felicio in charge of coordinating the sale of weapons and drugs at the border of Paraguay and Brazil. Weapons and luxury items were also seized on the raid of Gayoso’s home.

It is unclear if the two men arrested have been charged.
