A mother has been arrested after her newborn baby was found dead and half-buried by the side of a road in southern Spain.

The shocking discovery took place in the municipality of Vicar in the municipality of Almeria province in the southern Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia.

Reports state that a local resident called the emergency services at around 6:30 pm saying that he had found a newborn baby dead on the side of a road in the rural area known as La Cimilla de Vicar.

The Spanish Civil Guard reportedly went to the scene along with both the local and the national police and medical services.

The baby’s body was found wrapped in several garments and half-buried in the ground, according to reports.

Local authorities reportedly proceed to take the tot’s body to the Legal Medicine Institue of Almeria where they will carry out an autopsy.

The mother, whose name is unknown was arrested by the Spanish Civil Guard at around 9:30 pm, local media report.

Reports state that the local authorities suspect she gave birth at her house on her own.

The investigation is ongoing under a secrecy order as the authorities work to determine the cause of death of the baby.
