A mother and her young son have died in a horror road accident after they were flung from the window of their overturning pickup truck.

The incident took place in a rural area of the Brazilian municipality of Porto dos Gauchos on the night of 5th December.

Daiane Camilo, 33, and her son, Joao Vitor Camilo Cupaioli, 11, died instantly after they were thrown from the pickup truck’s window.

Their bodies were found approximately 20 metres (65.6 ft) from the vehicle.

Husband Ronaldo Alberico, 44, and the couple’s other son, a 20-year-old who has not been named, were also travelling in the vehicle.

Alberico suffered abrasions and was taken to a hospital by the emergency services. The son was reportedly uninjured.

The family had been travelling to their home in the nearby municipality of Novo Horizonte do Norte.

Alberico had been driving the Chevrolet S-10 when he veered off the road, causing the vehicle to overturn several times.

A police spokesperson said: “Preliminarily, we found that there may have been an internal detachment of the tyre, which ended up bursting and causing the deviation. As a result, the driver lost control of the steering and the vehicle overturned.”

A photo taken at the scene showing the extent of the damage to the vehicle conveys the severity of the accident.

The victims were buried in Novo Horizonte do Norte yesterday. (7 December)
