Motorist Sends Cycle Racers Flying

This is the cyclo-path moment a driver pulls out in front of a cycle race in Mexico and decks a large group of them in just six seconds.

The race was the second leg of a competition in Nealtican, in the state of Puebla, in Central Mexico, on 8th October, with the shocking crash taking place at around 12:37 pm.

The motorist was apparently oblivious to signs saying the road was closed and drove straight into the race leaders.

The reckless driver, who has not been named and who reportedly disregarded signs saying the road was closed, was arrested after a number of participants hit his car and were sent flying into the air.

The injured cyclists were promptly transported to the hospital, where they received medical treatment.

Most of them were discharged, but one cyclist remains under medical care for injuries to the clavicle area.

It was later discovered that the renegade motorist was operating an unauthorised or “pirate” taxi.

As a result of this incident, the organisers of the competition, held in honour of San Miguel Arcangel (Saint Michael the Archangel), a prominent figure in various religious traditions, including Christianity, cancelled the event.

All cyclists were also refunded their registration fees.

The organisers have however come under fire for failing to provide enough infrastructure when closing the roads, such as security staff to talk to drivers, according to local media.

It is currently unclear if the driver has been formally charged. The authorities are understood to be investigating the incident.
