This footage shows the cargo hold closing on a massive Russian Antonov An-124-100 military transport heading to the coronavirus-hit US with humanitarian aid from Russia.

United States President Donald Trump accepted the offer of aid from his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, resulting in the plane filled with masks and other medical equipment setting off from Chkalovsky airfield outside Moscow on Tuesday night.

Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, 52, said that the 67-year-old Russian leader arranged the deal personally with his American counterpart Trump, aged 73, and that the offer was accepted with gratitude.

It was landing in Ireland’s Shannon airport today (Wednesday) and then heading on to the United States. Pictures show the hold of the massive plane, currently the largest military transport aircraft in active service, packed full of cardboard boxes filled with the urgently needed medical supplies.

The move brings the two countries closer together after relationships soured when Russia was accused of trying to interfere in the 2016 US election.

The gesture was made despite the fact that masks and other medical equipment are also in short supply in Russia, where Moscow has gone into lockdown, and according to the Johns Hopkins University there are 2,337 people infected in the country and there have been 24 deaths.
