This is the moment a huge buffalo charges and rams parked scooters as people nearby scatter in terror.

The incident took place on Jan Mohammed Street in the city of Pune in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

The images show a group of men herding some buffalo through the city streets, when suddenly one of the buffalo escapes its handlers and charges at some parked scooters, toppling them over.

The animal might have been spooked by one of the scooters that was pulling up and had just parked.

People scatter in fear as the rowdy buffalo appears to run after them out of shot. The buffalo handlers can be seen struggling to maintain control over the other animals.

The images were shared online where they have been widely viewed.

At least four people, including a scooters rider named in The Indian Express as Zuber Shaikh, were injured when the buffalo rammed the vehicles, in the incident which reportedly took place earlier this August.

Shaikh has reportedly filed a complaint with the authorities.

Three people, who have not been named, were arrested by Pune City Police on charges of negligence for failing to control the animal. The police later said that they had released them on bail.

The investigation is ongoing.
