Man Dies Of COVID 19 After He Travelled To India With His Wife To Adopt A Daughter

An Italian man who dreamed of becoming a dad who had travelled to India in order to adopt a little girl has died after he was infected with COVID-19.

Enzo Galli, 42, lost his battle with COVID-19 in a hospital in Florence, Italy, yesterday (25th August) after returning from New Delhi, India, with his wife Simonetta Filippini in April.

With the help of the “International Adoption” association of Florence, the pair, who come from the Italian town of Campi Bisenzio, organized to adopt an Indian orphan who they called Mariam Gemma from New Delhi.

Whilst the pair were in India the Delta variant began to spread and as a result, they were left stranded in India where Simonetta tested positive for COVID.

Local news site Fanpage reports that she was immediately hospitalized, while her husband frantically looked for ways to get his family back to Italy.

He set up an online fundraiser and raised EUR 8.000 (GBP 68.554) for a special medical flight equipped for bio-containment which flew the family back to Italy in the begging of May.

Before the flight left India, Enzo also tested positive for the virus and as a result he and his wife were both taken to Careggi University Hospital in Florence on their arrival back home.

Their daughter was sent to Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence in quarantine, where she also tested positive.

By the end of May, both Simonetta and Gemma were discharged from the hospital and returned to their home in Campi Bisenzio.

Enzo’s health on the other hand continued to deteriorate, he developed breathing issues and had severe heart complications.

In August, he experienced a septic shock and had to undergo dialysis for a kidney malfunction.

Enzo had spent every day in hospital since returning to Italy after picking up his adopted daughter, and during most of the time he was unable to see his family.

After almost four months in hospital, Enzo died on 25th August due to COVID-19 related complications.

Emiliano Fossi, the Mayor of Campi Bisenzio, commented on the tragic story and said he sends his condolences to Enzo’s wife and daughter.
