Diego Maradona has called for former Argentine President Mauricio Macri to be removed from his new executive role in FIFA because he is an “impostor” who left the country in “hunger and misery”.

World Cup winner Maradona, 59, made the comments in an online post to his army of 5.2 million online followers.

The post shows a picture of former Argentine President Macri, 60, with a message criticising FIFA’s decision to appoint him as the new Executive Chairman of its Foundation Board.

The caption to the post read: “It is incredible that after four years of lying to the Argentine people, is now lying to FIFA also.

“He only left hunger and misery here. After struggling to free ourselves from the IMF (International Monetary Fund), he indebted us again FOR LIFE.

“I am asking FIFA to please review this decision and to relieve this imposter of the post!”

The social media post has received 179,316 likes in 16 hours since its publication.

The message reportedly does not come as a surprise as Maradona has been critical of Macri’s policies since his presidency.

Local media report Boca Juniors president Jorge Amor Ameal and River Plate president Rodolfo D’Onofrio also disagreed with the decision saying it “is regrettable”.

Macri served as the Argentine President between 2015 and 2019 following controversial politician Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, 66, who served as the leader of the country between 2007 and 2015.

Macri represented the Republican Proposal (PRO) political party and is reportedly preparing to go back into the world of politics this February, however the post he intends to take is unclear.
