This is the moment a man is pulled to safety after he threw himself to the ground next to the platform to avoid being run over by an express train.

The incident occurred at Andheri station in India’s western state of Maharashtra and was recorded by an onlooker.

Local media report the man, who has not been named in reports, had been taking a shortcut across the tracks but could not climb up onto the platform in time when he realised the train was coming.

So instead he threw himself on the ground between the tracks and the platform.

In the video, the coaches of the Avantika Express train travelling to Mumbai can be seen passing over the man.

After the last carriage passes onlookers jump down to help the man to his feet and he appears unharmed.

A Railway Protection Force (RPF) official confirmed the man had been crossing the tracks instead of using the footbridge when the incident occurred.

The RPF officials said the man had no excuse not to use the bridge as it had not been congested at the time.

The Avantika Express runs between Mumbai Central and Indore and is a daily service.
