A Turkish man who denied that he did anything wrong when he stabbed his estranged wife in her hospital bed moments after giving birth to their infant son has been jailed for 18-and-a-half-years.

Before she had even held her baby boy in her arms, the new mother had to be rushed from the maternity ward to intensive care for emergency treatment to her multiple stab wounds.

Fortunately, the young mum survived the ordeal.

The attacker, Ahmet Yirtici, had been told earlier by his pregnant wife Guldane Yirtici that she no longer wanted to be with him.

But she had not been suspicious when he turned up at the Dr. Ersin Arslan Training and Research Hospital in the Turkish city of Gaziantep when she went into labour on 24th August 2019.

New mum Guldane thought he wanted to see his son, but instead he had waited until the boy was safely born, and then pulled out a knife and stabbed her multiple times.

A court heard that the motive for the attack was his anger at the fact that she wanted to leave him, and was looking for a divorce.

During the subsequent trial at the 1st High Criminal Court in Gaziantep, Yirtici, whose age was not given pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, and refused to accept that anything that happened was his fault, blaming his wife for provoking him by demanding a divorce.

However, taking into account the CCTV footage of the day in question as well as doctor’s reports and witness statements, Yirtici was sentenced to 18 and a half years in prison.

The judge added that Yirtici did not qualify for a reduced sentence because he showed no sign of remorse.
