A man who claimed he murdered his girlfriend after she brought up his erectile dysfunction has been jailed for 20 years.

Donovan McInnes, 32, said his impotency problems were a constant source of friction between him and his girlfriend Adele Bezuidenhout, whose age was not given, and added she crossed the line when he spotted her kissing someone else.

He said when he confronted her about what he had seen, she told him he was not a real man and as a result, he had killed her.

He pleaded guilty to murder during the attack on 18th August 2016, saying he was sorry for what happened but she should never have insulted his manhood.

He said his potency problems were caused by an injury that made it difficult for him to have sex.

On the night of the murder, they met at her home at the Rietvlei Ridge Country Estate in Cornwall Hill in the South African capital Pretoria, and went for a meal at a local restaurant where they met a group of men and discussed good places to go out and party.

He told the court: “Everybody was happy and in a good mood; after paying for another round of drinks at the bar, I saw her leave the table and she went outside. I then saw her kissing one of the men who were at our table.”

He said he punched the man and his friend waded in to protect him so he was forced to flee in his car where he drove to his girlfriend’s house to treat his injuries.

She had already arrived back there and a row quickly ensued where she told him he was not a real man.

He said he lost control and started punching and had no idea how many times hit her. When he calmed down, she was no longer moving.

An autopsy later confirmed that she had died from trauma caused by blows to the head and body that resulted in internal bleeding.

The victim’s mother said her daughter had been a wonderful person and the family were happy that the killer would be behind bars for many years.

Judge Mokhine Mosopa at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria warned that those who killed women or children deserved to be punished to the full extent of the law, and jailed him for 20 years.
