A 37-year-old has been arrested for attacking a couple with a machete in their bedroom because they had earlier offended him by farting in his face.

The incident took place in the sub-district of Lubuk Begalung in the city of Padang located in the western Indonesian province of West Sumatra.

According to the police, the couple were identified as 46-year-old F.G. and his 41-year-old partner N.R.D.

Cops say F.G. had allegedly managed on more than one occasion to approach his 37-year-old neighbour A.S and break wind in his face.

Following the prank which the couple found amusing, the 37-year-old stewed on the incident for several days before descending on their home on 21st January while brandishing a machete, according to local media.

He went into the couple’s bedroom and found the man F.G. asleep in his bed before hitting him on the head and chest with the machete, according to reports.

The man’s wife then entered the room after hearing the commotion and A.S. allegedly attacked her too.

The woman reportedly suffered injuries to her arms and ear.

The couple was taken to hospital and the husband is still said to be in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, A.S. has been arrested and he admitted to attacking his neighbours for no other reason than the fact that they had hurt his feelings with the farting gesture.

Outside the police station, the suspect told reporters: “There are no other problems, only that they farted at me last week.”

He added that he has never been close with the neighbours, certainly not to the point where flatulence was acceptable as a humour device.

A.S. has reportedly been charged with aggravated assault although the police said they are continuing their investigation to determine whether there was another reason behind the attack.

His charge may also depend on whether the male victim manages to survive his injuries.

The investigation continues.
