The Majorcan authorities have invited British social media influencers to the holiday island this season so they can blog about it in the hope of boosting tourism.

The City Council of Palma in Majorca in the Spanish Balearic Islands revealed plans to bring British online influencers to the island and showcase its famous Bay of Palma for them to blog about to their followers.

Tourism councillor Elena Navarro, who runs the Palma de Mallorca Tourism Foundation, told local media: “Our initial promotional budget for this year was 600,000 EUR (524,760 GBP) and we assigned 300,000 EUR (262,340 GBP) to highlight Palma as a destination.”

According to Navarro, the idea came up in November 2019 during the World Travel Market (WTM), an event for the global travel industry hosted in London.

Navarro said: “On that occasion, several of them (British influencers) came to our stand and we invited them to come to Majorca this summer.”

According to local media, the authorities are organising the visits for either August or September.

There have been 232,128 cases confirmed of COVID-19 in Spain with 23,822 deaths, according to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University.
