These are the pictures of a loyal dog who was pictured staying with his pal after the other pooch was run over and left in a muddy puddle – and both dogs have now been rescued.

The pictures were taken after a storm hit the city of Sorocaba in the southeastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo when a local resident spotted the two pooches on the side of a road.

The man who found the dogs, who is named ‘Lukas Marangoni’ on social media, wrote that the male dog was looking after the injured female dog.

In the photos, the male dog can be sitting next to the injured female who is lying in a puddle of mud next to a fallen tree.

He wrote online: “Is there anyone close to the Wannel Ville area who can help these little dogs… I don’t know what happened but one is injured and the other is looking after it.”

Local media report the dogs were rescued by a team from the Animal Protection and Well-Being unit before being taken to a local animal shelter.

Local resident Eric Barreto reportedly looked after the dogs until the rescuers came and he told reporters: “They were in the rain. The female had its hind legs broken and the other one was fine and was looking after it. They didn’t let us get too close.”

The injured pooch had been run over and was treated for its injuries. It remains in a veterinary surgery in the town of Mairinque and NGO Amparo Group For Man’s Best Friend (GAMAH) have said they will raise money to pay for its treatment.

The male dog is reportedly healthy and will be castrated before being put up for adoption at the shelter.

The shelter looks after 73 animals, made up of 53 dogs and 21 cats which are available for adoption.
