This cute dog that waited patiently outside a hospital for its owner who died of Covid-19 has been adopted by medical staff.

The dog, named Covito by the hospital staff, is now fed daily after being seen walking around the Hospital General Nuevo Laredo in the city of Nuevo Laredo in the north-eastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

The pooch turned up with its owner who arrived for a test and was kept in hospital after it came back positive.

The dog continued to wait for its owner even though the man later died in hospital with the virus.

Dulce, an administration worker in charge of attending coronavirus patients, told local media that Covito is very friendly and adored by staff members as the dog cheers them up during this difficult period.

She said: “This dog gives us all a lot of happiness. When it sees us, it accompanies us from the coronavirus area to the hospital’s general area, no matter if it is 5am, it is always waiting by the entrance.”

She also said that security guards have told people not to call a shelter or the local authorities as the dog is well attended and is in good health thanks to hospital staff.

The dog was given a blanket and a makeshift cardboard kennel to keep it warm for now.

According to the hospital staff, the dog runs towards the entrance any time it sees someone going out.

It is unclear what will happen to the dog in the future, but for the moment it remains living outside the hospital.
