The young animal reportedly had multiple injuries to its body and the Environmental Police were called. The wild cat was rescued in a poor condition, with abdominal distention and a fracture to one of its elbow.

The Regional Autonomous Corporation of Valle del Cauca (CVC) said: “It is being offered a balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, according to its requirements and state of biological development.

“It is a female youth which, immediately, was transferred to the veterinarian and then to the San Emigdio Wildlife Care and Assessment Center in Palmira, where it is being treated. It was wandering, seemingly, in search of its parents which it had lost.”

The director of the North Regional Environmental Management of Colombia, Edwin Alexander Serna Alzate, applauded the woman who found the cub for communicating with the competent authorities.

The jaguarundi has been listed as Least Concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List since 2002.

The cat’s range spreads from southern Texas and coastal Mexico in the north, through Central and South America east of the Andes reaching as far south as northern Argentina.
