This is the heartwarming moment a young woman journalist became famous when she stopped to use her woollen scarf to cover a shivering stray dog.

Duygu Elma, 23, spotted the dog lying on the pavement as she left a cafe where she had enjoyed a hot drink on a cold winter’s day in the city of Zonguldak in the northern Turkish province of the same name.

Duygu, a local newspaper journalist, noticed the dog was so cold that it was shivering and decided that she had to do something to help.

So she took off the checked scarf from around her neck and spread it out over the shaking stray dog.

Her act of compassion was captured on CCTV security cameras and struck a chord with animal lovers when the footage was later shared on social media.

Duygu said: “I was at the cafe with my friends. When I was leaving, I saw the in front of the cafe. The weather was rainy and so cold.

“I stopped to check if the dog was warm enough. When I realised it was shaking from the cold, I couldn’t bare to see it so I took off my scarf and covered it.

“I didn’t think this would be such a big thing, it was a normal act I would expect from anybody. Street animals are vulnerable, especially in cold weather, everyone should take care of them.”

Turkey is famous for its stray dogs and cats which are generally well loved. Many people leave out food and shelter for them, especially during the colder winter months.
