Three teens have been killed and four others injured when their car crashed into a van as they headed to a party.
The incident took place on the ES-456 state highway in the municipality of Aracruz in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo on the night of Sunday, 10th October.
Julia Camily Fraga, 16, died at the scene whereas Leonardo de Freitas Martins, 15, and Leticia Koch, 16, were taken to a local hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries.
According to news outlet Tribuna Online, Leonardo had dreamed of becoming a musician and Leticia a doctor.
According to Julia’s grandmother, housekeeper Lourdes Florencio Fraga whose birthday it was, it was raining at the time of the accident.
She told news outlet G1: “She got ready, had a nap, and then the girls called her and she said ‘nan, I’m off’. I said ‘Julia, don’t go, it’s raining’ and she said ‘I’m going, it’s planned with the girls’.
“I told her ‘take lots of care’ and she told me ‘don’t worry, Nan, you can relax’. She gave me a hug here at the gate. It was my birthday. She wished me a happy birthday.”
According to the police, all the dead and injured were travelling in the same car. The driver was a 19-year-old man, who was among the injured and was reported to be in a serious condition.
The driver was the oldest passenger and he, Leonardo and another girl and boy who were among the injured were cousins.
At the time of reporting, the four injured victims were still in hospital, three in Aracruz and one in the state capital Vitoria.
The unhurt van driver told the police he collided head-on with the car after it veered into his lane.
The police are investigating the cause of the crash and the respective drivers’ blood is being analysed to find out if either had consumed alcohol before driving.
