A athletic schoolboy who accidentally took part in the Munich marathon after taking a wrong turn while on a shorter run – has earned himself a medal for his efforts.

The 14-year-old named only as Michi was taking part in a 10-kilometre (6.2-mile) run that had been organised as a side event to take place alongside the Munich Marathon which only accepts contestants aged 18 an over.

Both were taking place on the same day in the southern city of Munich in the German state of Bavaria.

According to local media, Michi set off on the 10-kilometre run but missed the signpost for the turn off for the 10-kilometre run and instead of running the correct route landed on the marathon route with the adults.

He said: “When I realised I was on the wrong route, I was already in the English Garden and thought I may as well continue running.”

He carried on running and completed the marathon in an impressive 3 hours and 28 minutes.

The kid is not in the official list of marathon finishers though as he was not registered for the marathon and was officially too young. Marathon participants have to be 18-years-old according to German marathon regulations.

Despite that he was given a finishers’ medal.

Michi was proudly presented with his medal and was posted online with the message:

“Sensational! Michi only wanted to run 10 KM but instead completed the marathon in 3 hours 28 minutes and 28 seconds. Really he should have been at least 18-years-old, nevertheless, he received a well-deserved medal.”

Many social media users congratulated Michi and many were impressed with his timing, which many trained hobby marathon runners would be proud of.
