Kimberly Ugalde was murdered in the coastal resort city of Vina del Mar, which is located north-west of Santiago in Chile, on 20th February 2021.

Alex Fabian Brante Farias shot his girlfriend in the chest after having stabbed her in the leg with a knife during an argument.

He then fled the scene but was later detained by the authorities. They found Kimberly, age not reported, dead inside the flat that they shared together.

Brante claimed to have shot Kimberly accidentally.

His lawyer, named as Constanza Perez, is quoted in local media as saying: “My client has told me that he has in his possession documentation that shows the existence of some type of disorder that, due to the haste of this hearing, we have not been able to access.

“However, they are related to obtaining a disability benefit for a type of intellectual deficiency.”

But the judge, named as Rodolfo Moreno, rejected the defence’s claims, saying that the documentation does not exist and that the defendant’s priors were enough to convict him.

The judge sentenced Brante to 20 years in prison for murder, as well as three years for owning an illegal firearm, and 61 days because he had stabbed his sister in 2019, adding that all of the sentences must be served one after the other.
