The Spanish Air Force has transformed the largest transport plane in Europe into a flying hospital that can transport 19 coronavirus patients at the same time.

According to local media, the Airbus A400M, Europe’s largest transport aircraft, has been transformed into a flying hospital at the airbase of Torrejon de Ardoz in the Spanish capital of Madrid.

Reports state that the plane has been fitted out to transport five patients in critical condition and 14 in a normal condition during the COVID-19 crisis in the country.

The Spanish Air Force carried out a test flight to check if the medical equipment does not interfere with the plane’s systems and to make sure medical procedures can be carried out during the flight.

Reports said the Aeroevacuation Medical Unit (UMAER) of the Spanish Air Force is testing several aircraft to adapt them to fly patients inside Spain.

Another aircraft, an EADS C-295, proved it could be suited to fly four critical patients and four normal patients during a test on the 3rd of April.

The Airbus A400M was made in the company’s Seville factory and is reportedly used by Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain.
