This is the moment an icon of the Virgin Mary is flown in a helicopter over a Mexican city to ask for the end of the COVID-19 pandemic after their Easter celebrations were cancelled.

The virgin of Dolores de Soriano has been paraded in a helicopter above the city of Queretaro in the state with the same name in central Mexico in a flight organised by several representatives of the local diocese who boarded the aircraft next to the religious icon.

The video shows the icon of the helicopter being flown over the city, with priests holding other religious iconography and filming.

Priest Jose Martin Lara Becerril told local media they prayed for the population and the end of COVID-19, but more specifically for those infected with the virus, the health professionals and all their relatives.

Lara Becerril said: “We want to give hope in this moment of crisis, in this difficult moment. We don’t want them to feel abandoned by God, He is present.”

Images show the priests holding the icon into the air on a hill above the city before it was pictured in the helicopter.

Local media reported that the diocese asked for a collective prayer from the citizens after the religious celebrations of the Easter week were cancelled and used the icon to do this.

Citizens reportedly responded using mirrors to send light into the sky or by waving a piece of cloth and bowing when they saw the helicopter in the sky.
