The car is caught underneath the collapsing road which crashes onto the ground in a cloud of dust.

Local media report rescue teams were called to the scene and one person from the car was pulled from the debris and taken to hospital with serious injuries. The other person in the car was pronounced dead at the scene and rescue teams are still working in the area in case there are other victims.

The reason for the collapse is unclear but an investigation has been launched.

Reports state residents in the area had previously noticed cracks in the wall which collapsed and had alerted the construction company but no measures were taken.

An unnamed resident who witnessed the incident told local media: “We were having dinner when we heard a noise. Everybody panicked, when we came out to see what was going on we saw the collapsed wall. They closed this area, it is very clear that negligence is in question. The wall collapsed while cars were passing and we don’t know how many people are under the debris. Currently, three or four buildings have been evacuated.”

The Minister of Environment and Urbanization, Murat Kurum said in a statement on social media: “The Urbanization and Environment provincial directorate teams coordinating with the Istanbul Governorate have been sent to the scene immediately and have started the necessary work.

“Our ministry has started the necessary investigation into the case. Unfortunately one citizen lost their life under the debris and one was injured. We express our condolences for the deceased citizen and wish a fast recovery to the injured citizen.”

The victims have not been identified in reports.
