This is the shocking moment a motorist ploughs into a group of people on mobility scooters and bicycles in a Chinese city, reportedly killing four and injuring 10 others.

The incident took place on Renmin Road in the city of Handan in the Chinese province of Hebei at around 4.40pm on 20th March.

According to local reports, the driver of a white Ford hit a group of people in the lane for non-motorised vehicles, leaving four dead and 10 injured.

In the footage, a large group of people is seen moving slowly along the lane, separated from the main road by a pavement and hedge divider, as the white car ploughs into them, sending bodies flying through the air.

Other videos show bodies strewn across the lane and the suspected driver being detained by the police next to the crashed Ford.

After the incident, the emergency services arrived on the scene to treat the injured and detain the driver.

Fourteen people were initially reported as injured and the local authorities later confirmed that four had died.

A city spokesperson said the incident is still under investigation and it has not been established whether the motorist was driving under the influence.

Representatives of the Handan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government said they are placing great importance to the investigation and have assembled a specialist team to probe the incident in depth.

The local authorities said investigators have studied the accident scene and spoken to victims in hospital as the police probe continues.
