Homeless Man Finds Newborn Baby With Umbilical Cord Attached In Bin At South African Beach

A homeless man searching rubbish bins has found a newborn girl still attached to her umbilical cord and placenta in a rubbish bin near a South African beach.

The baby girl was found at South Beach in the city of Durban in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal in the early hours of 11th July.

The private ambulance company Emer-G-Med said their paramedics were sent to the area to assist the local police after the homeless man found the baby in a bin.

Emer-G-Med said in a statement: “In the early hours of Sunday morning, Emer-G-Med paramedics were called to assist Durban Metro Police Services, after a homeless man made a shocking discovery whilst dumpster diving on Boscombe Place in the South Beach area.

“Paramedics responded to the scene and found a new born baby girl in the dustbin, still attached to her umbilical cord and placenta. She was treated and stabilised on scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.

The ambulance firm added: “She remains in a stable condition and good spirits. We commend the homeless gentleman for alerting authorities and ultimately saving this little lady’s life.”

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the matter.
