A 21-year-old man has suffered a suspected spinal cord injury after diving headfirst into a shallow pool in Mallorca.

The young Spanish national, name not reported, suffered a serious head injury and mobility problems in his legs after the incident at an apartment complex in the resort town of Alcudia on the island of Mallorca in the Spanish Balearic Islands.

According to reports, the victim was with a group of friends when he decided to dive headfirst into a pool that was barely one-metre deep.

He hit the bottom of the pool hard and a large gash opened up on his head. The young man was reportedly in shock and unable to move his legs when paramedics arrived on the scene.

As the victim presented injuries compatible with a possible spinal cord injury, paramedics activated polytrauma protocols and transferred him to the Son Espases Hospital in the island’s capital Palma with extreme care.

Meanwhile, Civil Guard and Local Police officers attended the scene to start the investigation and establish the circumstances leading up to the serious injury.

At the end of May, a 19-year-old tourist suffered a similar incident while staying in Magaluf in Majorca on holiday.

The tourist dived into a shallow pool that was barely half a metre deep at Ocean Beach Club.

He reportedly suffered a cervical fracture and was taken to the Son Espases Hospital for medical care.

The police investigation is ongoing.
