This is the moment a taxi passenger screams as her cabbie – who looks at his phone over a dozen times in half a minute – runs over a pedestrian at almost 60 mph.

The taxi driver surnamed Bi is accused of looking at his phone no fewer than 18 times in just 30 seconds before the crash in Linshui County, which is in Guang’an City in south-western China’s Sichuan Province.

Authorities say the fatal collision happened on the Baotou-Maoming Expressway on 6th May while Li was driving a couple home.

Security footage from Bi’s taxi shows him repeatedly moving his eyes off the road to look at his mobile phone in the centre of his dashboard.

The cabbie looks to be interacting with his phone too as he uses his right hand to tap the screen while going at an average speed of 92 kph (57 mph).

He looks up a split second before an impact can be heard, with him then swerving as a female passenger screams in the back seat.

The authorities said the pedestrian, who mistakenly strayed onto the motorway, was killed instantly.

Bi claimed he was reading messages sent from his taxi company about upcoming trips.

He has already been given a 200-RMB (22-GBP) fine and two demerit points for dangerous driving.

But he is still awaiting trial and sentencing for his part in the fatal crash.
