This is the moment a young man jumps off a city bridge into the water to save a drowning 21-year-old woman after racing to the scene upon hearing she was in trouble.

According to local media, the young woman jumped off the Golden Horn Metro Bridge which spans Istanbul’s Golden Horn urban waterway in north-western Turkey.

The young woman, identified as 21-year-old Sirin B., was reportedly attempting to kill herself.

Upon hearing about the alleged suicide attempt, brave resident Yusuf Muhsin Kaya ran to the scene and leaped into the estuary after her.

Other witnesses called the emergency services, and the police and paramedics arrived promptly on the scene.

Kaya kept the woman afloat and, with the help of officers on a police boat, he accompanied her back to dry land.

Paramedics treated her at the scene before taking her to a nearby hospital where her condition was said to be stable.

Kaya told local media: “I was on the tube when somebody came into the carriage shouting ‘a woman has jumped off the bridge’.

“I got off the tube and when I arrived [on the bridge] another man was about to jump in. I said ‘I am a good swimmer, I will go’ and I jumped in to save the young woman.

“I am a member of a swimming club so I was confident. She had swallowed a lot of water and was drowning when I got to her.”

It is currently unclear if the police are investigating the incident.
