This is the moment a section of the roof of a stadium at the World Volleyball Championship collapses during a storm and rainwater comes thundering down onto spectators.

The incident occurred at the Morelos University Cultural and Sporting Poliforum area in the state of Aguascalientes in central Mexico during a group match between Brazil and Japan at the Under-20 World Volleyball Championship.

In the video, water can be seen pouring through the roof at the top of one of the stands when more of the roof gives way and a torrent of water begins gushing into the arena.

Onlookers can be heard screaming as the water falls onto the spectators and another clip shows the water pouring through the hole in the roof and down the stairs of the arena.

Local media report the match was suspended as the authorities checked the roof to see if it was safe to continue. The authorities decided there was no risk of further damage and the match was allowed to continue.

Reports state the roof gave way during heavy rainfall which brought down 16 trees in the area and caused flooding.

Mexico’s National Water Commission said that 56.9 millimetres of water had fallen in one day, when the average annual rainfall for the area is 520 millimetres.

No injuries were reported during the storm and local media report the stadium will require some restoration. Matches due to be held in the arena could be moved to the Domo de la Feria arena in Leon if the restoration works interfere with the matches.

The Government of Aguascalientes said in a statement that “there was no need to fear and everything is under control” with regards to the arena.
