A shocked mother has told how she found cannabis gummy worms in her five-year-old son’s Halloween sweets.
Tiffany Burroughs had taken her three sons – aged one, two and five – to a trick-or-treat-style event at JJ’s Restaurant in St. Charles, Missouri State, USA on 8th October.
While her sons were collecting sweet treats, she noticed an odd package of gummy worms in a bowl.
She did not think about it again until she got home and looked through what her children had brought back.
Tiffany told local media: “I remembered it when we walked through the door. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, let me see that.’
“And I looked at it and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s definitely not for kids.'”
The package contained Delta-8 gummy worms.
Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol is a psychoactive cannabinoid that can cause adverse effects, including hallucinations, vomiting, tremor, anxiety, dizziness, confusion, and loss of consciousness.
One minor in the US is known to have died after eating them.
After finding the package, Tiffany called police, who notified the restaurant.
Police officers and the restaurant co-owner combed through the remaining sweets and found no more cannabis products.
Lt. Tom Wilkison of the St. Charles Police Department told local media: “We don’t believe that at this time there was malicious intent, that somehow these gummy worms got mixed in with candy because they do look like candy.”
Tiffany said: “We will always be checking candy now.”
