A Hindu guru who is head of a school that forced 60 girls to strip to show if they were menstruating has claimed women who cook for men when having their periods will be reincarnated as dogs and men eating the food will be reborn as bullocks.

The claims, which the guru attributed to religious texts, were made by Swami Krushnaswarup Dasji of the Swaminarayan Temple in the town of Bhuj in India’s westernmost state of Gujarat.

He said: “Menstruating women who cook food for their husbands will be reborn as dogs in their next life while men consuming food prepared by women on their period will be reborn as bullocks, as per religious texts.

“I don’t care if you do not like my views, but this is all written in our shastras (scriptures). If a menstruating woman cooks food for her husband, she will be definitely born as a female dog in her next life.”

During the sermon, the religious teacher added: “Women do not realise that period of menstruation is like doing tapasya (penance). This is written in our shastras.

“I do not like to tell you all these things, but I have to warn you. Men should learn to cook. It will help you.”

According to local media, the guru is also associated with a temple that runs a college in the city where three leading members of staff were arrested on 17th February.

The staff members, including the college head, were detained for forcing over 60 girls to remove their underwear to check if they were on their period on 11th February, according to reports.

Local media said the college dorms have a rule where menstruating girls are not allowed to dine with other resident students.
