A five-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet when revellers fired guns into the air to mark the arrival of Christmas Day.
Tragic Candelaria Enrique and her family had gone into the street outside their home in Rosario, Argentina, to celebrate when the clock struck midnight.
But just minutes later, she was hit in the head by a stray bullet from celebratory gunfire.
Her grieving uncle told local media: “I didn’t see anyone shooting. It was full of people. It was 0.05am, all the neighbours were outside.”
Candelaria was taken to the Sanatorio de la Mujer health facility covered in blood.
She was declared brain dead at midday on Christmas Day, and medics declared her legally dead the next morning (26th December).
Candelaria was an only daughter, and her devastated parents decided to donate her organs.
Her death is being investigated as manslaughter.
A source told local media: “It is difficult to know where the projectile came from. Testimonies were taken and there are other investigative measures underway.”
Her schoolteachers paid tribute to her on social media, writing: “Cande, you’ve left an enormous void. We will miss you today, tomorrow, and forever.
“We love you, Cande.
“Wishing your family lots of strength, especially your mum and dad. Excellent people, excellent parents.”
