A gruesome human skeleton with most of its teeth missing has washed up on a beach in northern Turkey.
The incident took place in the neighbourhood of Sancakli in the district of Terme in the northern Turkish province of Samsun at around 4pm on 13th July.
According to the news site En Son Haber, a resident walking on the beach reported the sighting to the police after encountering a human skeleton covered with moss washed up on the shore.
Gendarmerie teams arrived on the scene and carried out a preliminary investigation.
The human skeleton was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute where an autopsy will be carried out to identify the deceased.
After photos were shared on social media, eagle-eyed netizens noticed the skeleton had almost no teeth, with some speculating they had been pulled out to prevent the skeleton being identified.
That raises the possibility that the victim was murdered before being thrown into the sea, although police have so far not commented on the speculation. The body has in the meantime been sent to the medical examiner’s office which will attempt to establish the cause of death.
The investigation will also attempt to identify the sex of the victim.
An online commentator wrote: “It looks to me like the mafia did it. I hope they are identified. At least their family will have a grave to visit.”
The investigation continues.
