The Omani authorities have announced that a green turtle has returned to its shores to nest after a period of 23 years.

The turtle, which was first registered by Oman’s Environment Authority in 1996, appeared on the coast of Ras al-Jinz located in Oman’s Ash-Sharqiyyah South Governorate.

It was the first time the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) had been seen in Oman in 23 years, according to the Environment Authority.

A spokesperson for the environment department said: “After 23 years, a green sea turtle has returned to the Sultanate’s coast to nest in the Turtle Reserve.”

The spokesperson added that the reptile returned to the Ash-Sharqiyyah South Governorate “where it was first registered in 1996 by environment employees”.

Oman is the only country in the world that begins with the letter ‘O’ in the English language.
