An Indian farmer who was waiting outside a wheat procurement centre for two days to sell his crop has died of a heart attack while still waiting his turn.

The incident took place in the district of Dewas in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh when farmer Jairam Mandloi suffered a heart attack outside the procurement centre.

Local magistrate Pradeep Solanki told reporters: “A farmer has died here. According to the doctor, a preliminary medical examination suggests that he had suffered a heart attack.

“It is very unfortunate. An enquiry is being conducted.”

Solanki explained that social distancing measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic has caused some technical difficulties and increased crops this year have slowed the system.

He added that help is being offered to the farmer’s family and arrangements for compensation are being process by the local administration.

Solanki said: “This time, the wheat for procurement is four to five times more than what it was last time.

“There is also lockdown and social distancing has to be maintained.”

The farmer’s son Sachin Mandloi said that he left the house on 29th May to sell his crop before spending two days in line.

He added: “I was informed that my father was sick and was taken to the district hospital. I rushed over and learned that he had passed away.

“He had left the house on 29th May and had been waiting at the centre to sell the wheat.

“There is still a long line at the procurement centre.”
