This is the moment a family-of-four rocks their car back and forth while filling up at a petrol station reportedly believing they will fit more fuel in the tank by doing so.

The incident was filmed at a Shell station in the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru when a family from Singapore was filling up their SUV.

The footage was shared on Facebook by ‘HelloAsia Singapore’ where it has been viewed 120,000 times.

The caption said: “This is how the practice is passed down from one Singaporean to younger Singaporeans.”

According to local media, it is an urban myth that rocking a car allows drivers to pump more petrol in the tank.

In the footage, a family member is seen filling up the SUV with the nozzle as three others, including a small girl, rock the car from behind.

Filmed by the driver of a vehicle waiting behind them, the family is seen pushing the car back and forth in an apparent attempt to get more fuel in the tank.

Car workshop owner Vincent Emmanuel Lee said that pouring fuel slowly allows for more petrol to enter the tank and that rocking the vehicle does not do anything.

He said: “When we pump petrol into the tank, it creates foam and vapour which occupy the tank. When we wait for the vapour and foam to dissipate, that’s when you can pump more petrol into the tank.”
