Explosion: Popocatepetl Volcano Erupts With Fire, Smoke

This is the moment the Popocatepetl volcano explodes sending fire and plumes of smoke high into the air.

The active Popocatepetl volcano is located in the states of Puebla, Morelos and the state of Mexico in central Mexico and this latest activity was recorded by cameras from the National Civil Protection Coordination.

According to the National Centre for Prevention of Disasters (CENAPRED) the explosion was detected at 06:43 am on 26th September and left a column approximately 1.6 kilometres ( one mile) in height.

The National Civil Protection Coordination announced that this event resulted in the emission of low ash content which is dispersing to the north-northeast.

Due to the activity, the alert level around the volcano has been maintained on Yellow Alert Phase 2, with a warning not to come close to the volcano and follow recommendations due to the ash fall.

Local residents have been advised to cover their nose and mouth with a handkerchief or face-mask, clean their eyes and throat with clean water, wear glasses and avoid contact lenses, as well as closing windows and staying inside their homes for as long as possible.

The name Popocatepetl comes from the Nahuatl language and means ‘Smoking Mountain’. It is also referred to by Mexicans as ‘El Popo’.
