French side FC Nantes have announced they are going to pay tribute to Emiliano Sala with a special Argentina-style kit because a national call-up was “his dream” one year after his tragic plane crash.
The club announced they would pay tribute to the striker on their social media page where they made a statement on their plans for their upcoming Ligue 1 match against Bordeaux.
Nantes announced: “On the occasion of the reception of the Girondins de Bordeaux, Sunday at 5 pm in the Beaujoire stadium, the management, players, supporters and the entire Club will pay tribute to the memory of Emiliano Sala, who disappeared tragically one year ago.”
Local media report the Nantes squad will wear a kit modelled after the Argentina shirt as it was Sala’s dream to receive a cap from his national team.
A pitch banner will also be placed in the centre spot with the former forward’s face as images of his best moments at the club will be played on the stadium’s jumbo screen.
Club supporters will also hold a large banner dedicated to Sala as they sing “He is an Argentine that never gives up, he is Emiliano Sala” which is the chant they sang after he scored a goal.
Argentine club San Martin de Progreso, based in the Santa Fe Province in centre-east Argentina where Sala started his youth career, recently named their stadium the Emiliano Sala Stadium.
The club also unveiled a mural dedicated to the footballer’s memory on Thursday 31st October in 2019, Sala’s would-be 29th birthday.
Former striker Sala died in a plane accident on 21st January 2019 as he was en route to being unveiled as a Cardiff player.
The forward died in the accident and his body was later pulled from the English Channel in February of 2019.
Nantes are set to play against Bordeaux on Sunday 26th January. They are fourth with 32 points which qualifies them for the UEFA league group stage. Bordeaux are 13th with 26 points.
