Eight Children Suffocate To Death After Getting Locked In Parked Car

Eight children aged between four and nine have suffocated to death after they got locked inside a parked car.

The grim discovery was made on Adelayo Street in the community of Jah-Michael in the area of Olorunda in the Nigerian city of Lagos at around 5 PM on Saturday, 4th December.

The eight youngsters were found inside a Honda Pilot SUV parked inside a fenced property.

The property’s resident, named Saliat Kazeem, said she was sleeping when the group, which included her own granddaughter, climbed inside the vehicle and accidentally got locked in.

The suspicion is that the youngsters died of suffocation.

When the authorities arrived on the scene, residents had already smashed in the SUV’s glass windows to try to free the children from the vehicle.

According to local media, the victims were from four different families. Seven have been named as Zainab, Tayab, Farida, Mamod, Yakubu, Wahab and Aisha.

The unnamed child was Kazeem’s granddaughter, who had no relatives in the vehicle.

The incident was reportedly discovered when Kazeem woke up to feed her granddaughter.

According to local media, some of the children were still breathing when residents managed to get them out of the vehicle. However, the survivors reportedly died en route to hospital.

Local media also reported that residents subsequently tried to lynch Kazeem, holding her responsible for the incident, as it took place on her property.

However, the police reportedly managed to save her from harm after they stepped in and sealed off the scene of the incident.

Police spokesman Adekunle Ajisebutu was quoted in local media as saying: “Eight children were said to have mistakenly locked themselves in an abandoned car while playing.

“Their bodies have been recovered and deposited at the Badagry General Hospital’s morgue for autopsy so as to determine the actual cause of death.

“Notwithstanding the report made to the Police, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered a thorough and speedy investigation into the circumstances surrounding their death.
