A man found his pregnant partner mauled to death in the woods by a pack of hounds after she called him in a panic when the dogs set upon her and her own pooch while they were taking a walk.

The incident took place in the Forest of Retz, one of France’s largest, in the Aisne department north-east of Paris, in the Picardie region.

The woman, unnamed but who was 29 and who is said to have been from Rebenacq in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques department of south-western France, was six months pregnant and was taken a stroll in the forest when she was set upon by a pack of dogs, believed to be hunting hounds, and they attacked her and her own dog.

She called her partner in a panic and he immediately left work to rescue her but he arrived too late and she was already dead.

A coroner who arrived on the scene identified dog bite marks on her corpse and established that she had been mauled to death by a pack of dogs.

The Forest of Retz is one of the country’s largest and covers about 13,000 hectares.

Police are investigating whether the pregnant woman’s tragic death is linked to a hunt that was in progress at the same time as the incident, in the same area, and which involved dogs.
