This is the shocking moment an elderly Egyptian man sets fire to his nephew during a row over GBP 1.
The incident was filmed in the Egyptian capital Cairo during a dispute over an EGP-20 (GBP-1) fee for cleaning the stairs of the apartment block where they both lived.
The 73-year-old uncle, named as Hassan Abu Al-Saud, paid for the cleaning bill and asked his nephew to repay him for the service. However, the victim forgot about the matter and the suspect believed he was trying to avoid paying.
The suspect bought a bottle of fuel, went to his nephew’s business, and started smashing the shop’s front sign, according to the news site Al-Bayan.
While engaged in a heated row, the uncle reportedly doused his nephew, identified as Ahmed Nabil, in fuel and set him on fire in front of a crowd of onlookers.
Reports said the victim was taken to hospital by witnesses where he spent 24 hours in intensive care.
During that time, he reportedly underwent four emergency surgeries to save his life, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
The victim’s brother Muhammad Nabil claimed that their uncle was jealous about the victim’s successful business and had tried to stir up trouble between them in the past.
He added: “My brother had three children and always tried to avoid any argument with our uncle. All he was trying to do was provide for his family.”
He also said that the suspect cheered loudly while his brother was burning on the ground, and said: “I set you on fire in front of all these people.”
The suspect has been placed under arrest as the investigation continues.
