These are the edible shot glasses two enterprising women have created to reduce the use of single-use plastics and they are now available to buy in the United States and Mexico.

According to local media, Ana Cristina Dorantes and her sister Carolina launched their own company named ‘Food Lab’ to commercialise the edible shot glasses under the brand ‘Yummy Shots’.

The shot glasses are made of gelatin and can be bought in 300 different selling points in Mexico and Texas in the United States as well as being available on Amazon in the rest of the United States.

Cristin Dorantes told local media: “We have given an option that you can eat and if not it really decomposes wherever you throw it away. It can also be used to feed animals, we also wanted to add more value besides just being ecological, we also wanted to create new experiences.”

According to the National Association of the Plastic Industries (ANIPAC) in Mexico, one-use products represent 47 percent of the volume that the industry produces.

Some Mexican states such as Baja California Sur have already forbidden the use of plastic bags and straws.

Cristina Dorantes said: “I think it is a systemic problem, we have eliminated plastic bags, and we are doing the same with disposable products but I think the next step will be eliminating plastic from packaging.

“It has taken us a long time for a supermarket chain to let us in and when they saw the product was working their competition came to us immediately.”

The project has received the attention of the Mexican media, with the enterprising pair having appeared on the list of the ‘30 Promises of 2020’ in the magazine ‘Forbes Mexico’.
