Grim hit-and-run footage – caught on CCTV – shows the young girl, called Genesis, on her grandfather’s shoulders as he and her mum walk on the pavement after a trip to the shops and to her paediatrician.

Suddenly, a lorry mounts the kerb and smashes into a street pole, bringing it crashing down on the little girl and her grandfather and sending them sprawling on the tarmac.

Then the lorry seems to run over the man and his granddaughter before the frantic mother picks up her child and carries her out of shot.

The horror crash took place in the town of Villa Celina, in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 5th November.

The girl’s grandfather, mother and an unnamed 22-year-old man were also injured.

The 37-year-old lorry driver – named as Ariel Rodriguez – was reportedly drunk and did not stop after the crash, continuing down the street and hitting other objects.

An ambulance was reportedly called to the scene but never showed up.

The injured were rushed by family members to a medical facility in Villa Madero where Genesis died of multiple injuries.

The other injured parties are still in hospital receiving treatment.

Prosecutor Claudio Fornaro says drink-drive tests on the arrested lorry driver showed he was three times over the limit.

Police investigating the incident have opened a case for aggravated manslaughter.

Angry locals protested in front of the police station to demand that the driver remain in custody and that the city should install a traffic light.

An unnamed uncle the girl told local media: “My sister is physically fine but mentally she is devastated, like the whole family.”

He added that his father, the girl’s grandfather, also unnamed, “is in a critical condition.”

He added: “In the morning she had gone to the paediatrician with her paternal grandmother, she was in perfect health.

“Then she had lunch with us, I said goodbye to her and half an hour later they called me and told me that this had happened.”

And he said of the lorry driver: “First thing the driver did was grab his phone and ask for help to get out of the situation.

Only passers-by stopped him from fleeing, he added.

The investigation is ongoing.
