The next episode of the long-running BBC series ‘Doctor Who’ will be set in the historical city of Aleppo in northern Syria.

Promotional material for the upcoming episode, scheduled for screening in the UK on 9th February, depicted the Citadel of Aleppo, a large medieval fortified palace that is considered one of the oldest in the world.

Sadly, the iconic landmark was badly damaged during the ongoing Syrian civil war.

According to local media, the Doctor Who episode will feature mysterious creatures called Chagaskas who terrorised the city of Aleppo in the year 1380.

In that point in history, Aleppo was actually under the control of the Mamluk Sultanate, a medieval realm spanning Egypt, the Levant, and Hejaz.

In 1400, the city was raided by Mongol warlord Timur Lang who slaughtered over 20,000 citizens before using their decapitated heads to build large mounds.

In more recent times, the city has been the scene of numerous conflicts during the Syrian civil war.

Doctor Who is one of the UK’s longest-running and most successful TV shows.

The Doctor has been played by 13 actors since it first hit the screens in 1963 and the humanoid extra-terrestrial is currently portrayed by Jodie Whittaker, the first female to play the role.
