Syrian Girl, 5, Killed By Kidnappers After Family Unable To Pay Ransom

Kidnappers in Syria have snatched this five-year-old girl and then sent her dead body to her parents in a bag when they were unable to pay the ransom they demanded for her release.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on 18th February that young Shahd Al-Hatim was snatched by kidnappers in the city of Raqqa.

The suspects reportedly demanded a ransom payment of USD 15,000 (GBP 10,657), more than an average annual salary in the Middle Eastern country, for the girl’s release.

The SOHR said that “a few days” later, her dead body was found in a bag left near her home after her family members, who have not been named, were unable to raise the funds.

Raqqa is currently under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces and kidnappings, killings, thefts and prostitution are commonplace, according to the SOHR.

Syria’s ongoing civil war will enter its 10th year next month.
