The 33-year-old man, later identified as Jesus Antonio Rodriguez, was fatally shot by deputies in Moreno Valley, in the US State of California, on 6th February.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department stated that deputies were called to the scene after Rodriguez’s mother reported him being aggressive towards her under the influence of an unknown substance.

Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation but Rodriguez – diagnosed with schizophrenia – allegedly grabbed a spiked wooden bat.

After two unsuccessful stun gun attempts, authorities say Rodriguez was shot when he advanced towards the deputies.

The man’s family argues that he was having a mental health crisis and that a non-lethal approach should have been taken, as they had informed the deputies about his BB gun and schizophrenia diagnosis.

No deputies were injured in the incident.
