Police have arrested this father accused of killing his infant son by throwing him from a 5th-floor window on his first birthday.

The shocking incident happened in a residential district in Dazhou’s Chuantong District in south-western China’s Sichuan Province.

District police said they detained the infant’s father Zhang, 29, who was identified only by his surname, over the alleged crime at 11:10pm local time on 14th June.

Both the boy’s elderly grandparents were later seen picking up the tot’s body on the ground below as officers arrived to investigate.

Chuangtong District authorities said the child, who turned one on the day, was declared dead following a reported 20-metre (65-foot) fall from the 5th-floor bedroom window.

Residential security guard Ms Yuan recalled: “I was standing about 10 metres (32 feet) from my guard booth when I saw something thrown from above.

“It landed 3 to 4 metres (9 to 13 feet) away from me. At first I thought it was rubbish but later discovered it was a child – then I screamed.”

The boy’s grandmother, Ms Qin, revealed to local media that she and her husband took care of the boy while their son and his wife worked.

She claimed to have quarreled with her son over his earnings minutes before the incident, telling him: “You’re useless if you don’t earn more money.

“I don’t care if you live or die, but you at least have to keep your family alive.”

Qin said: “The baby was crying in my arms and he said he would take him. I thought he was going to put him to bed.

“But he took him and threw him. I didn’t have time to react.”

Zhang allegedly attempted to jump out the window shortly after but was stopped by his parents.

The boy’s mother reportedly arrived on scene after the incident and is also being questioned by Dazhou police.
