A couple who scooped a USD 50,000 lotto prize have told how they did it with a voucher for a free ticket.

The pair- from the area of Fort Washington, Maryland State, USA – used a coupon to get their USD 2 (GBP 1.6) free scratch card during a break at Walmart. 

They were reportedly taking their grandson to college when they decided to buy a few items at the store located at 409 North Fruitland Boulevard in the city of Fruitland, on Wednesday, 26th March. 

And the retirees were astonished when they discovered the next day that they had literally ended up with money for nothing.

The pair – who use the codenames Big Mama and Pop Pop – called lottery headquarters where their win was confirmed.

Maryland Lottery said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “She showed the ticket to her husband and later saw the winner alert story on mdlottery.com, which reported that a USD 50,000 [GBP 40,667] winning ticket had been sold in in Wicomico County.

“Nobody in Wicomico County was doing the winner happy dance, ‘Big Mama’ said, because she and ‘Pop Pop’ were doing a ‘happy dance’ of their own several counties away!”

The couple collected their prize at 1800 Washington Blvd #330 in the city of Baltimore on Friday, on 31st March.

Revealing that they kept their big win a secret, they added that they will spend the money on a vacation getaway.
