A pretty young French girl who vanished after calling her mum to say that she would be home in a few minutes has been found dead in a stream by a police sniffer dog.
The corpse of Victorine, 18, has been found in a stream near a pond in the commune of St Bonnet, in the Isere department in south-eastern France.
The steep area meant that the location was “difficult to access”, according to investigators quoted in French newspaper Sud Ouest.
Victorine had been reported missing on Saturday evening.
According to French newspaper 20 Minutes, after going with friends to the Village de Marques shopping centre in the town of Villefontaine, the student at Lyon 3 University set off to her family home in the Fougeres district.
Shortly before 7pm, she was seen in the area of the La Prairie stadium, confirmed by the city’s CCTV cameras. It is believed she was set to take a bus back to Les Fougeres.
Victorine had phoned her family around 7pm to let them know that she was on her way home. Since then, she had not answered the phone or sent any messages.
It was her sister Romane who sounded the alarm, taking to social media to post that she was missing.
On Sunday morning, nearly 200 people took part in a search to find Victorine, described as a pretty young woman with bright eyes and long brown hair, and who was 1.65 metres (5.4 feet) tall.
During the search, a bloodhound picked up her scent near the Turitin stream, the outlet of the Saint-Bonnet pond.
A pair of trainers, similar to those worn by the young woman at the time of her disappearance, a white handbag that resembles Victorine’s and a face mask were discovered there.
According to French newspaper Le Dauphine Libere, the young girl’s body was found clothed.
Audrey Quey, the public prosecutor in charge of the case, has stated: “Everything suggests that this was no accident”. Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
The investigation, opened for kidnapping, illegal confinement and intentional homicide, is now in the hands of investigators from the city of Grenoble. An autopsy is due to be carried out today. The cause of death is currently unclear.
